urban ~ urbane

[the ‘a’ in ‘urban’ rhymes with the ‘a’ in “and” (soft sound); and the ‘a’ in ‘urbane’ rhymes with the ‘ai’ in “pain”]

Urban” (adjective & used only before nouns, with ‘rural’ as its opposite word in meaning) means ‘connected with or related to towns and cities’,

(urban area)

e.g.

Air pollution is a more serious problem in urban areas.    [i.e. the pollution in big towns and cities]

Urbane” (adjective & the ‘…ane’ rhymes with the ‘ane’ in the word “cane”) means ‘(especially of a man) good at knowing what to say and how to behave at parties, meetings (social situations), etc.; looking relaxed (at ease) and confident’,

To get more popularity, it’s important for the men in show business to be charming and urbane.
