taught ~ taut

Taught” (verb ~~~  teach – taught – taught – teaching ) is the past and past participle form of the verb word ‘teach’ which means ‘to give somebody lessons – the things they do not know; to tell or show somebody how to do or say something or how to behave’,

e.g.

Children at some schools are never taught any religion other than their own.

I’ve taught English language as a subject to many non-native English speaking students for over twenty years.

Taut” (adjective, with the opposite word in meaning ‘slack’) means ‘(of something, such as a rope, wire, skin, body, etc.) pulled or stretched tight; (of a person) looking tense, showing signs of worry, anger, etc.; not relaxed; (of a book, film, plan) exciting, not having any boring or unnecessary parts’,

a taut clothesline

e.g.

The strings on a guitar are stretched taut to give clear sound when struck.

She felt her face dry and taut in the cold weather.

His new book is a taut thriller.
