takeover ~ overtake
“Takeover” (noun) is ‘the act of taking control of a company or an organisation, usually by buying more than half its shares; (of a government, political party) the act of one political party or military taking control of the present ruling government, usually by using force or playing dirty politics’,
e.g.
Vodafone mobile phone server announced the takeover of Hutch, another mobile phone server. [i.e. the Vodafone company bought the share of the Hutch company and took control of Hutch]
The army checkpoint on the border is under the constant threat of rebel takeover. [i.e. the rebels may attack the checkpoint and take control of it]

“Overtake” (verb ~~~ overtake – overtook – overtaken – overtaking ) is ‘to reach a moving person or a vehicle from behind and then go past them by moving faster than they are in order to be before them; to become more successful, more important by developing or increasing quickly’,
e.g.
You must not try to overtake a vehicle when the road is not clear.
Some experts fear that India’s population growth will overtake even China’s in near future.
