“Sort” (noun) is ‘a group of people, animals, plants and trees, and things that have the same qualities, characteristics, features; (of people) ‘a group that share the same ideas, sentiments, etc.; to some extent, partly, but not totally, not definite or exact; a type/kind’,
e.g.
What sort of clothes do you wear in summer?
You can meet and talk to all sorts of people at the Youth Club.
“Do you understand what I’m saying?” → → “Sort of … I suppose,” [i.e. some of it, not completely]

“Sort” (verb) is ‘to put or arrange things or people according to size, purpose they are used for, amount or the different groups they belong to; to put or organise something that is mixed up or not in proper order so that it can be made ready to be used; to find a solution and deal with a problem or difficult situation’,
e.g.
The postman sorts out the letters according to the door numbers before starting out on his beat.
Sort out the rubbish into things that are breakable and things that are unbreakable.
