smitten ~ smitten

Smitten” (adjective) means ‘(of a person) suddenly feeling or realising that one loves or attracted strongly to someone else; suddenly affected (attacked) by a feeling or disease’,

e.g.

As soon as he laid his eyes on her, he was smitten.   [i.e. he fell in love with her at first sight]

Brad was smitten with Mary.

The entire family, including the maid-servant, was smitten with viral fever.

Smitten” (verb & very formal word) is the past participle form of the verb word ‘smite’ ~~~ smite – smote – smitten  which means ‘to hit something or someone hard in order to punish or attack; to have a great effect on somebody, especially an unpleasant one’,

e.g.

My conscience has smitten me once again for lying to my wife.   [i.e. I have stared feeling guilty again for telling lies]

These tribal people were smitten by the police too many times for not accepting to be their informers.
