“Smart” (adjective) means ‘(of a person) understanding things or people very well and acting wisely in difficult situations; intelligent and sensible; (of a person, usually a naughty young boy) trying to be clever in a disrespectful way; cheeky; (of a person) wearing neat and attractive clothes and looking tidy; (of machines) being controlled by computers and reacting in a suitable way depending on the situation, or the task given’,
e.g.
He wore a smart brown suit.
Smart students get high ranks and get admission to good colleges.
“Don’t try to be smart with me, boy,” the head-teacher threatened the naughty boy.

“Smart” (verb) is to feel a sharp stinging pain in a part of the body, usually eyes; to feel upset or sad because someone has hurt your feelings, or something, such as a plan, attempt, etc. has gone wrong or failed’,
e.g.
Her eyes smarted while she was chopping onions.
She is till smarting over the defeat in the elections.
