[A]
(also ‘Steller’s sea cow’) a kind of animal – sea mammal – extinct (= not found in the present world; died out completely) – seal-like animal – a large cigar-shaped body with relatively small head, no teeth, two stout front flippers (= muscular fins), and flat muscular tail (fluke), without hind (back) flippers – 25 feet in length and 3 tons (3000 Kg.) in weight; fed on (ate) kelp (= water plants growing in the water); lived in the Arctic waters near Bearing Island
[B]
The two species of large sea mammals – manatees and dugongs – are also called “sea cows” because they feed on grasses and plants that grow in the water. They are slow and harmless! These ‘sea cows’ grow to 8-10 feet in length and 250-500 Kg. in weight; live for 60-70 years; found in certain parts of the world!
Special Features:
Some animal experts believe that the “mermaids”, the legendary (imaginary) beautiful women that are half fish and half woman, are nothing but these ‘sea cows’ which the drunken sailors thought were women!!
