“Scale”, as a noun, is ‘the size or level of something or the amount of something that is happening; different types of people or things, from the bottom level to the top level; (usually plural in form in British English – scales) a machine for knowing the weight of people or things; a system of numbers that is used to measure the power, amount, speed, quality, etc. of something; a set of marks with regular spaces between them on a device or tool used for measuring’; and as a verb, it is ‘to get to the top of a mountain or any tall building; to be very successful; to reduce or increase the amount, force or size of something’,

The Government has underestimated the scale of the farmers’ problems.
