Salon” (noun, with a single ‘o’, and short vowel sounds) is ‘a shop where people can get their hair trimmed, dyed, washed, curled, etc., usually for men, a more sophisticated barber shop; a shop where expensive and fashionable clothes are sold; a room with fashionable sofas and other pieces of furniture in a large house, like a mansion, where guests are received’,

a beauty salon, having hair and face done

e.g.

My boss has his hair done in an expensive salon and his wife buys her clothes in the expensive salons in the city.

We all sat in the salon and marvelled at the expensive paintings on the walls.

(guests being entertain in the salon of a mansion)

Saloon” (noun, with a double ‘o’, and a long second vowel sound) is ‘a public place (pub or bar) where alcoholic drinks are sold and drunk; a car that has a separate enclosed space at the back to keep one’s luggage, the most suitable for a moderate family; a large comfortable hall where passengers on a ship (cruise) can sit and relax, having soft drinks and snacks’,

{‘Saloon’ is also used to refer to a motor car.}

[(old usage) 'Saloon' is rarely used in place of "salon'.]

The detective visited several cheap saloons looking for a notorious criminal.

When the new baby was born, they sold off their old car and bought a saloon.
