[also called ‘sable’ (in the States), ‘butterfish’ (in the states & Australia), ‘black cod’ (in the UK & Canada), ‘blue cod’, ‘bluefish’, ‘coal cod’ (in the UK), ‘coalfish’ (in Canada)]

{Though the sablefish is called ‘cod’ in some parts of the world, it does not belong to the ‘cod’ family.}

a kind of fish – deep sea bottom dweller – finned fish with scales and bones – dark body; size: 2½-4 feet long, and weight: —; feeds on (eats) fish and other sea animals found on the bottom of the seas; lives for, on average, 50 years, and some can live for 80-90 years; only two kinds found in North Pacific Ocean, Bearing Sea and the Gulf of Alaska

The sablefish is an important food fish in some parts of the world; it is a major commercial importance to the Japanese fish industry.

The oily sablefish meat is said to be nutritious as well as delicious as it is rich in vitamins!
