red admiral
an insect – a kind of butterfly – dark brown with red/orange, white and black patterns (design) – bands of red/orange bands in the middle of the fore (front) wings and at the edge of the back wings, 3 large black spots and 2 rows of white spots on the edge of fore (front) wings, two antennae; size: in terms of wing span – the width of the wings from tip to tip when completely spread – 2-3 inches; feeds on (eats) as a caterpillar, leaves, and, as an adult, juices from flowers and ripe fruit, sucking up the juice with its spring-like proboscis; lives for 3 weeks as an adult (or more); found in most parts of the world

The red admiral is one of the large beautifully coloured butterflies. The red admiral gets its name from the chevrons on the naval uniform!
