{‘Razorback’ is the name given to three different animals: 1. a fish, 2. a whale and 3. a pig.}
1. razorback
(also called ‘fin whale’, ‘finback whale’, ‘common rorqual’) is a whale – a sea mammal – a baleen whale (baleen = a stiff material the whale has as gills, which people use for different purposes) – size: 80-100 feet long, and weight: 7 tons; feeds on small fish, crabs, shrimp, krill, etc.; lives for 90-95 years; found in the oceans
Special Features:
The razorback (whale) is the second largest whale and the second largest animal in the world, the first being the ‘blue whale’!
The razorback (whale) is featured on the stamps of Faroese, an autonomous province of Denmark, near Iceland!
2. razorback fish
(also called ‘razorback sucker’) is a fish which grows to 3 feet long and weighs 4½ Kg.; feeds on very small plant matter and other very small sea animals; lives for about 40 years; found mostly in and around the Colorado river basin in the USA
Special Features:
Razorback fish have a ‘keel’, a hump like growth, on their back.
3. razorback
(also known as ‘old world swine’, ‘feral hogs’, ‘Eurasian wild boar’, ‘Russian wild boar’) is a feral pig (‘feral’ = the domesticated wild animals that have escaped from captivity and have gone back to their wild life) – an average pig in size and weight; found in North America
Special Features:
Razorbacks (pigs) are a popular game animal, i.e. hunted for fun in the USA!
Razorbacks (pigs) are so popular in the United States of America that it is the mascot for the University of Arkansas’s sports team, Arkansas state, USA; and also the mascot for the US naval ship ‘USS Arkansas’.
Razorbacks (pigs) are featured in several motions pictures (films/movies), for example, “Outback”; and a character in the world famous Marvel comics, who wears a razorback (pig) costume!
