prosecute ~ persecute

“Prosecute” (verb) is ‘to continue doing something; to accuse someone of doing or not doing something in a court of law’,
[The person who prosecutes is called a 'prosecutor'.]
e.g.
She tried her best to prosecute her studies.
On a notice board:
| TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED |
[i.e. anybody who walks on that particular piece of area without permission will have to face a criminal charge in a court of law]

“Persecute” (verb) is ‘to punish or treat somebody cruelly for political or religious beliefs; to trouble somebody continually, giving no peace of mind’,
[The person who persecutes is called 'persecutor' and the person who is being prosecuted is called 'persecutee'.]
e.g.
Some political leaders in power persecute the Opposition party members on the pretext of their being anti-social elements.
Millions of Jews were persecuted mercilessly during Nazi regime in Germany.
