poppet ~ puppet

Poppet” (noun & British usage) is ‘a word used for a little child or animal that one loves very much’,

{also a ‘poppet’ is a kind of valve and a small wooden strip on the ships}

(a poppet?)

e.g.

Where’s Sam, my little poppet?  I haven’t seen him this morning.

Puppet” (noun) is ‘1. a doll, of wood or some soft material, figure of an animal or person that has joints which can be moved with the help of strings tied to them, and the person who makes it move by the strings (called puppeteer) is not seen so that people, usually children, feel that the doll moves on its own  2. a person (or a government) that is completely under the control of somebody else’,

e.g.

a traditional puppet, with strings attached

1. Before the motion pictures (films) puppet shows used to be a popular entertainment.

e.g.

a political puppet, controlled by another person from above

2. Some renowned political analysts felt that Bush Jr. was the puppet of Bush Sr.
