Though these four words in this set are related to the money paid or received for some service, apart from other meanings, in certain situations using one word in place of another may cause confusion. It is more or less the kind of job a person does decides which word is to be used.
“Pay” (noun) is ‘used most commonly for the money received monthly, weekly, or even daily for doing some work or job for others (it is the most common word of this set)’,

“Wages” (noun & mostly used in its plural form) is ‘the money received for doing some work or job at regular times, usually weekly for some decent job or work’,

“Salary” (noun & the plural form — salaries) is ‘the money received for doing some job at regular times, usually monthly for some decent job or work’,

“Remuneration” (noun) is ‘a very formal word for ‘pay’ though it could be small in amount, and for some services like for giving some good advice, for writing stories for publication, for doing some simple and delicate or technical and complicated work. It is not necessarily on regular basis or at regular times or on monthly basis’,
e.g.
The employees’ demand for ‘more pay and less work’ is not always reasonable.
The workers are paid their wages on every Friday.
The bank staff (clerks) is/are paid their salaries on the thirtieth of every month.
Our General Manager resigned his position because he thought he was given very small remuneration.
A successful writer usually gets handsome remuneration for every one of his books from his/her publishers.
