[‘mettle’ rhymes with ‘metal’]

Mettle” (noun) is ‘(of people and animals) the quality of courage, endurance (the ability to bear the pain and strain of doing something), strong will-power to continue something hard, difficult or stressful’,

e.g.

My horse fell and hurt its leg, but it showed its mettle by finishing the race in second place.

Metal” (noun) is ‘any mineral substance that is solid and shiny and can be shaped by pressing or heating, such as iron, tin, gold, etc., but not wood, plastic, fibre or glass’,

e.g.

Tin is a useful metal.

With the coming of plastic, the metal things have become outdated.

Isn’t glass a metal?
