leek ~ leak

[‘leak’ rhymes with ‘leek’]

Leek” (noun) is ‘a kind of vegetable, like an onion plant but with a longer stem’,

e.g.

My mother has made some delicious soup with leek.

Leak”, as a noun, is a hole or crack in something such as a container, roof of a building, pipe, tube, etc. caused by overuse or accident, through which a liquid or gas passes; spreading of news or secrets’; and as a verb, it means ‘to allow something to pass through a hole or crack; to let news or secrets known to others’,

e.g.

The roof has many leaks in it, and it’s almost like standing in the rain.

The fire accident was due to a leak in the gas pipe.

The company’s secret plans leaked out and were in every newspaper.
