lack ~ luck

[slightly different vowel sound]

Lack” (noun & verb) is ‘to have something less than what is needed; to be without, usually something important or necessary; need’,

e.g.

He completely lacks self-discipline.

She did not pursue her studies for lack of money.

Luck” is (noun & in informal American English Verb) is ‘some chance (happening) that brings or supposed to bring a person good or bad fortune; fate’,

e.g.

She had enough luck to go abroad for higher studies.

We should always wish others good luck.

Common Errors

When he was a boy, he used to lack in confidence.  [wrong]

When he was a boy, he used to lack confidence.        [right]

2.

Our cricket team certainly does not lack of enthusiasm.  [wrong]

Our cricket team certainly does not lack enthusiasm.       [right]

3.

At the end of the dinner, someone noticed the lack of ice-cream.  [wrong]

At the end of the dinner, someone noticed that there wasn’t any ice-cream in the fridge.  [right]
