kernel ~ colonel:

[‘kernel’ rhymes with ‘colonel’; the letter 'c' in 'colonel' is said with a 'k' sound, as in "king"]

The confusion is with the pronunciation as they both have the same sound.  Watch the related videos for the right pronunciation.

Kernel” is ‘the part of a grain or seed within the hard out cover; the edible part inside a nut’; and (figuratively) ‘the main or essential part of something’,

(a wheat kernel)

e.g.

The beaks of some birds are specially designed for eating the kernel of grain.

____________________

Colonel” (usually abbreviated to Col.) is ‘a rank of an army officer and the officer with that rank’,

a Colonel in the US Army Warrior Transition Command, Col. Jimmie O. Keenan

e.g.

Col. Brad is going to command our regiment.
