J P (Justice of the Peace):

(plural: ‘Justices of the Peace’)

Charles F Clowson, Justice of the Peace, Haynesville, Louisiana, USA

A person who gives judgements in small courts of law, and has the power to witness and sign the legal documents and conducts marriages and gives license to couples to marry, mostly in counties and boroughs; a magistrate (a judge of a low rank, and the office is called ‘The Office of the Justice of the Peace’)

Felicity Burton, Justice of the Peace, Australia

{Started in 1195 AD in England by the king Richard who appointed knights to keep peace in troubled areas.  It used to be an unpaid position and so only rich and important people in the community were appointed or selected.  Those Justices of Peace were mostly without any knowledge of written law, but were regarded as respectable citizens and so their judgement in settling the local disputes were respected.
