halibut
a kind of fish – sea fish – bony flat fish – more elongated body for a flat fish; large, mostly blackish-grey on the upside and white on the underside;
both eyes on one side (on the upside); size: on average, (male) 4½ feet, (female) 6-7 feet long, (the longest being 8½ feet), and 10-12 Kg. heavy (the heaviest being 180 Kg.); females being larger; feeds on (eats) fish and crab, clams, squid, octopus and even some water birds; lives for 25-40 years (female), and 20-25 years (male); found mostly in the warmer waters of Atlantic and north Pacific oceans
Some common halibut kinds are: Atlantic halibut, bastard halibut, California halibut, Pacific halibut
Special Features:
The halibut is a popular food fish and sport fish (= fish caught for fun as a hobby)
The name ‘halibut’ means: ‘hali’ = “holy” and ‘butte’ = flatfish, i.e. they are eaten on ‘holy days’!
The halibut is the largest of all flatfish! (The largest in weight is 400 Kg.)
The female halibut grow faster and larger than the males.
The Pacific halibut’s liver and viscera (= soft internal parts, especially the intestines) are used in making vitamin A!
