foal

a foal with its mother

a young horse, donkey and other animals of horse family, especially under one year old

A foal is a general name, but to refer to a male baby horse we use ‘colt‘, and to a female baby ‘filly‘.
Figures of Speech:
1.

(a)  as idle as a foal

(b)  as ragged as a foal

2.

spalder like a new-dropt foal [stagger like a newly born foal]  (‘spalder’ = stagger = unable to stand properly and walk steadily; ‘dropt’ is the old word for “dropped” which in this sense means ‘born’)

3.

the foal’s share of the harrow (‘harrow’ = a farm tool used for breaking the soil; and the act of using the tool) [said of some light, easy work, and also an easy life]
