(to escape = to get away/run away from some place or person when one is kept in a place where there is no freedom to go or move freely as one likes)

Compare:

An ‘escapee’ is a person who runs away from a confined place physically to find freedom outside — from inside to outside; whereas an ‘escapist’ is a person who runs away or tries to get away from realities and responsibilities mentally, probably because of a weak mind or very lazy nature, and tries to escape into his/her own imaginary world or fantasy — runs away into his/her own mind — from outside into inside!
