In Canada, New Zealand and the USA, an engine driver is called a ‘locomotive engineer’, and in the UK, South Africa, Australia and some other Common Wealth countries, such as India and Pakistan, an engine driver is also called a ‘train driver’, ‘locomotive driver’, ‘locomotive operator’ or ‘train operator’!
Indian Railway Service is the largest employer in the world, employing all categories of railway related employers including thousands of engine drivers.
Engine drivers are not appointed directly, and before becoming an engine driver, a person must service as an assistant on an engine of his/her preference — steam engine, diesel engine or electric engine — for about three years after passing several tests and interviews.
Engine drivers like motor drivers and pilots must have an excellent eye-sight, particularly without colour blindness, and split-second decision making skills.

Note: Though ‘diesel engine driver’ is used to refer to an engine driver or locomotive/train driver’ that drives a train/locomotive that runs on diesel as contrasted with a train or locomotive that runs on electricity, ‘diesel driver’ or ‘diesel engine driver’ is also used to refer to the trucks that are run by ‘diesel’ instead of petrol, and in this context, a model of a car, a luxury or family car/automobile, that has an engine that runs on diesel is called ‘diesel engine model’ or just ‘diesel engine’.
