(plural: ‘doubting Thomases‘; pronunciation: the letter ‘b’ in “doubting” is silent)

a man who does not easily believe anything without physical proof;

a sceptic (British spelling) / skeptic (American spelling),

a doubting Thomas

e.g.

Mr George is a doubting Thomas, always doubting a new plan of action until he is shown all the evidence.

Lucy brought her fiancé home to introduce him to her family, and her grandfather, the doubting Thomas of the family, put the boy under prolonged scrutiny, asking the boy question after question, until he was satisfied that the boy was trust-worthy.

Whenever there is a new policy brought out by our government, there are many doubting Thomases asking all sorts of questions and expressing their doubts publicly to create some sort of distrust in the minds of the general public.

This expression ‘doubting Thomas’ came into existence from the Bible story that Saint Thomas doubted the resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Bible, i.e. one of the 12 disciples who did not believe that Jesus Christ rose from the grave the third day until he was shown the physical proof.
