deprecate  –  depreciate:

[different end pronunciation]

One of the common mistakes is to use ‘deprecate’ in place of “depreciate”.

{Some grammarians and linguists accept the use of ‘depreciate’ in place of ‘deprecate’ in certain situations, especially to mean ‘to express disapproval of something or someone’!}

(the letter ‘c’ in this word is said with a ‘k’ sound and the letters ‘cate’ rhyme with the letters ‘cate’ in “advocate”)

Deprecate” means ‘to express disapproval of something or someone’,

[It is a formal word, and the noun form is “deprecation”.]

e.g.

He deprecated what he felt was the rapid decline in the standards of English language.

__________

(The letters ‘ci’ rhyme with the word ‘she’)

Depreciate” means ‘to fall in value; to lessen, to make something little in value’,

[The noun form is ‘depreciation’]

e.g.

If he doesn’t invest wisely, his money will depreciate soon.
