deceptive  –  deceitful:

[Both these words mean ‘deceiving’ --- cheating.]

Deceptive” means ‘having the power to deceive (cheat); misleading’,

Words or appearances that are “deceptive” may not be deliberately so, i.e. they are not done intentionally or on purpose.

e.g.

Appearances are deceptive.  [It is a proverb to say that we may be deceived by the way a person looks; we come to conclusions, usually wrong ones, just by the way someone or something appears/the way how they look.]

Deceitful” means ‘dishonest’.

Words and/or behaviour of a person that are ‘deceitful’ may be intentional – done on purpose.

e.g.

He robbed the old woman of her money by his deceitful words.  [i.e. he told the old woman lies and stole her money]
