cue – queue
[both these words have the same pronunciation, as in the letter ‘Q’]
“Cue” means ‘a word or some special or particular action of an actor (or someone) used as a signal for another to do something or as a hint of how to behave; a hint or suggestion (expressed secretly); a long straight wooden rod used by billiard or snooker players to hit the balls; a twist or braid of hair — a pigtail’,
e.g.
It is my cue to leave him alone with his visitor when my father removes his spectacles and starts polishing them.
“Queue” means ‘an orderly line of people (or vehicles) waiting their turn to move on or to get something, or to buy something; a twist or braid of hair — pigtail’,
e.g.
There was a long queue at the theatre, and so, we too queued to get the tickets.
{Note: According to some language experts and some dictionaries, these two words are interchangeable, i.e. ‘cue’ can be used in place of ‘queue’.}
