cop:

(plural: ‘cops‘; pronunciation: the letter ‘c’ is said with a ‘k’ sound)

Apart from other meanings/definitions…

a policeman; a police officer,

cops on patrol

e.g.

My neighbour’s son is a cop, and so we feel safe and secure in this unruly neighbourhood.

Like in every other department, there are good cops and bad cops in the police department, too, but the million dollar question is there are cops to catch the criminals in other departments, but who is there to catch the cops that commit crimes!

It is funny yet shameful to hear such news items as the cops being arrested and sentenced for doing things that they are supposed to be stopping others from doing them; for instance, accepting bribes, beating up people, killing innocent people, breaking laws, misusing their power, and so on.
