convict:

(plural: ‘convicts‘; pronunciation: both the ‘c’ in this word are said with a ‘k’ sound as in “kong”, and the letter ‘o’ rhymes with the letter ‘o’ in “pot”)

The short form of ‘convict’ is “con“.

young convicts

a person whom others think or suspect has done some wrong or crime and is taken to a court of law where he/she is proven guilty ( that he/she had done it) and so is sent to prison as a punishment;

a person who is already in a prison as a punishment; a prisoner,

female convicts in thier convict uniform

e.g.

Jim is a convict, but his family members say that he’s innocent and the he’s convicted because they are not able to retain an efficient lawyer.

Jailers have tough time controlling long-term convicts as they establish themselves, forming factions and run the jail/prison as if it were their own territory!

Most drug related convicts are jail birds, i.e. once they are out of jail, they continue doing drugs and are caught by the police again and come to jail.

‘Convict’, with a slightly different first vowel sound where the letter ‘o’ rhymes with the letter ‘a’ in the word “about”, is more often used as a verb, ‘to convict’, to mean that somebody has been sent to prison because of some crime, e.g. “They have been convicted.”, i.e. they have done something wrong and are proven of that crime and are given punishment in a court of law.

Note: ‘Convict’ or ‘convict fish’ or ‘convictfish’ or ‘painted greenling’ is a kind of fish, and is more commonly called just ‘convict’. This fish is called a ‘convict fish’ because of the dark stripes on its green body, which looks like the uniform the human convicts wear in some prisons.
