(plural: ‘converts‘; pronunciation: the letter ‘c’ is said with a ‘k’ sound as in “kong”; the word opposite in meaning: ‘revert‘ and, less commonly & in other contexts, ‘pervert‘)

a person who has changed his political or religious beliefs and has accepted another political system or religion either by force or for special benefits, such as money, job or even citizenship of a country, or out of his/her own willingness or interest,

e.g.

Queen Noor of Jordan is a convert, i.e. she had been a Christian before she married the late King Hussein of Jordan, and after marrying the King, she converted to Islam.

At the peak of communism in the USSR,  we witnessed several converts — people changing their capitalist political views to communist philosophy — not only in Asia but also in Europe and the Americas.

Researches have shown that most of the religious converts in the third world countries — converting from one religion to another — have changed their religion not entirely for their religious beliefs.

Note 1: The word ‘convert’ is more often used in its verb form to mean ‘to change something from its original form, shape and position,  to another form, shape and position’, e.g. “Convert steam into water.” and ” This machine converts audio files to MP3.”

Note 2: The words converter (noun) & convertible (adjective) that come from ‘convert’ are also used in different contexts. Though the word ‘converter‘ is often used to refer to a person who converts a thing into another or a person belonging to one political or religious group to another, it  is more commonly used in reference to a machine, device or tool that changes one thing into another. ‘Converter’ is also used to refer to a computer software, e.g. Mediacell video converter, mp4 converter program, etc.
