a contract = an agreement, usually written and can be enforced by law, between two people (parties) that something will be done or supplied for such and such amount of money and within such and such period of time; ‘to contract’ = to make an agreement with someone on a business deal, and also to get some illness or disease

a person who agrees to do something or to supply something, for a fee;

a person who does some work or supply something on an agreement that something is done for a certain price within a certain period of time, but not by taking money on daily basis or at piece work;

a person (or a firm or company) that gets into an agreement with another to undertake some construction (building) work or supply construction material on a large scale for a certain amount of money,

e.g.

I’ve engaged a construction contractor to build my news house, and some other contractors that supply material and work force.

When the government proposes to build a bridge or road, it invites national and international contractors to send in their estimations and, after going through all the quotations, the experts in the government select some of them and give them the contract.

There are different types of contractors, each one specialising in a particular field: building or construction contractors, electrical contractors, oil drilling contractors, removal contractors, haulage contractors, defense or weapons contractors, and so on.
