compiler:

(plural: ‘compilers‘; pronunciation: the letter ‘c’ is said with a ‘k’ sound as in “king”)

a person, usually a writer, who gathers facts, information, etc. on a particular subject from different sources – from different books, different people, etc. – and puts them together (compiles) as a single collection (in a book),

Todd Berger, a compiler, USA

e.g.

B C Kumar is the compiler of this English language course material.

Most compilers choose a subject they are interested in and then start gathering as much information as possible and then writes a book or essay on that subject, giving all the needed references, citations and links.

These days the word ‘compiler’ is mostly associated with a computer program; however, we must know and remember that a ‘compiler’ is a person who gathers poems or folk songs written by renowned poets and writers, or series of war events recorded by historians or published in the old newspapers or chronicles, and puts them down as a single collection in the form of a book or essay.

‘Compiler’ is also used for a computer program that translates another program written in high level language into machine language. For an article that explains what a computer compiler is, please click here.
