‘to commute’ (in this context) =  to travel, usually from places little away from a city to the city and back, on a public transport system, such as a train, bus, ferry, or even a small aeroplane for short distances, regularly; and in another context, to change or reduce a penalty, debt, etc.; in law, to make a punishment/sentence less severe
