I read in some magazine that even the most renowned entertainers of the present had spent some years as unknown comics before their talent was recognised.

Most children think that their grandpas are real comics, making them laugh with their stories and facial expressions.
There is a simple difference between a ‘comic’ and a ‘comedian’: a ‘comedian’ makes people laugh with his/her jokes and funny stories, but a “comic” makes people laugh with his/her funny actions and body movements, mostly keeping the face in such a way that it makes others laugh; and a “clown” is entirely different from the other two with his/her make-up and colourful and strange clothes!

More common meaning is a comic book – a book with pictures and interesting stories, usually in plural form ‘comics’, e.g. ‘Superman’ is a character from a comic book.’ and ‘My children, like most other children, like to read comics.’ A ‘comic strip’ is a series of pictures drawn in a sequence telling some interesting or amusing story, found in newspapers and magazines, e.g. ‘Dad asks my little brother to follow the Tarzan comic strip in the daily to improve his language and drawing skills.’ For a list of the best comics in the world, please click here.
Note: ‘Comic’ is also used as an adjective to refer to people or things that are related to humour, fun, silliness and laughter, e.g. ‘Burton is one of the best comic writers, his books are full of humour.’
