colonialist:

(plural: ‘colonialists‘; pronunciation: the letter ‘c’ is said with a ‘k’ sound as in “king”)

a person, especially a European, who goes (went) in search of new lands, takes (took) control of a land and the people there, forms (formed) colonies and settles/lives (settled/lived) there permanently,

colonialists arriving

e.g.

The British were the colonialist of N. America, Australia & India; the Spanish were the colonialist of S. America; and the other Europeans were the colonialist of some places in Asia and Africa.

The process of a colonialist going to a new land, occupying that place and settling there permanently is called ‘colonising’ and the entire system is called ‘colonialism’.

Some critics say that President Obama is against colonialists in Africa and may make policies that will effect the farms and businesses of the colonialist there.

A ‘colonist‘, on the other hand, is a person who goes to a new place or colony, within one’s own country or in another country, and settles there; an original settler in a colony.

Note: In the second video you see on the right of this text, the word colonist is used, but not totally relevant to the meaning/definition of this word given above — the word is used as the name of an old newspaper. However, this video, which is not the property of  weblearneng, is posted here for the right pronunciation of this word so that learners hear it and practise saying it.
