(plural: the same spelling and pronunciation — chub (or, less commonly and in literary works — chubs‘; pronunciation: the letters ‘ch’ rhyme with the letters ‘ch’ in “church” and the letter ‘u’ rhymes with the letter ‘u’ in “but”)

a kind of fish – a general name given to any of the fresh water fish with lines in the fins seen clearly:

(a)

a Eurasian chub

 

any of several freshwater fishes related to carp and minnows, especially those found in the waters of Eurasia

 

(b)

an American chub

 

any of several North American fishes – fresh or sea water

as there are several of them, the sizes differ widely – there are chub that are a few inches long and some that grow to a foot and a half, and weighs up to 4 Kg.; they have stream-lined body covered with gray or black bordered scales, and a large mouth; they feed on anything – small fish, water insects, small water animals, and fruit, berries, bread-flakes, cheese, etc.;  found in Europe, Eurasia and North America

a Bermuda chub

Some common fish that go by the name ‘chub’ are: European chub, bigeye chub, blacktail chub, creek chub, flathead chub, hornyhead chub, lake chub, sea chub, slender chub, humpback chub, spotfin chub, etc.

Figures of Speech:
chub (noun)  =  an immature or inexperienced young person; a person foolish because of lack of experience; the part of the face below the eye and lower jaw (cheek)
Note: “Chubbs or Chubbies’ are fat homosexual (gay) men who like other fat men, and these terms are not to be used in formal situations!
