choirmaster:
(also ‘choir director‘; plural: ‘choirmasters‘; pronunciation: the letters ‘cho’ are said with a ‘kwa’ sound as in ‘quality’ — ‘choir…master’)
a man or, these days, a woman who directs and keeps the choir in order;
a choir leader,
a choirmaster with his choir
A choirmaster is usually chosen from the church community who knows not only choral music but also the system of his church service.
A choirmaster’s success depends mostly on the time he spends on rehearsals because the choir must be ready well in advance to sing appropriate songs for the different services and special ceremonies following the church calender.
Most school choirmasters are qualified music teachers working on full-time or part-time bases, training the school children in choral music.
