chaffinch
a chaffinch
(also called ‘spink’) a kind of bird – small song bird – related to finches; grows to 6-8 inches long and weighs 20-25 grams; feeds on (eats) seeds and insects – young chicks feed mostly on insects; found in Europe, western Asia, and north-western Africa, and introduced to several other places
Chaffinches are one of the popular pet (cage) birds; and they make our gardens more lively with their colours and cheerful calls – ‘rain’ call, short trill, and loud ‘pink pink’ calls. The male chaffinch has reddish breast feathers and blue-gray head feather with double white wing patches and bars that make them look very colourful in breeding season. Chaffinches build a neat cup-shaped nest from moss, grass and feathers kept in place with spiders’ webs and decorated with lichen, in the forks of trees or shrubs.
