cent – scent – sent
[All these three words have the same pronunciation, as in ‘sent’]
“Cent” is (a word from Old French which came from Latin ‘centum’ meaning ‘hundred’) ‘the hundredth part of certain money standards, such as a US dollar, a birr (Ethiopia); and abbreviation for ‘century’ and ‘centigrade’’, and the symbol is ¢ and even a shorter form is “ct.” for cent; 12ºC for centigrade, in 5th cent., for century
e.g.
A dollar is hundred cents.
Some students get cent per cent (100%) marks in Mathematics.
“Scent” is ‘the smell (body odour) left by an animal or person; a particular smell, usually pleasant; a power of smelling; perfume (pleasant smelling liquid)’,
e.g.
She doesn’t like the scent of roses.
He scented the danger and ran away.
[i.e. he suspected that there was some danger in being there and so he ran away]
“Sent” is both the past and the past participle form of the verb word ‘send’ which means ‘to cause or arrange something or someone to go from one place to another’, send – sent – sent — sending
e.g.
John has sent his girlfriend a picture-card from Italy.
