censor – censure
[slightly different pronunciation; the letters 'su' in 'censure' are said with a 'sha' sound]
“Censor”, as a noun, means ‘an officer who has the power to examine a book, film or letters (during war time) in order to remove any part that may be indecent, bad, offensive, etc.; and as a verb, ‘to examine a book, film, etc., in order to remove any part that may be indecent, bad, offensive, etc.’,
e.g.
She is one the panel of censors responsible for commenting on the ill-treatment of women in films.
Some parts of Hollywood films are censored before and after being shown in countries in other parts of the world.
“Censure” means ‘the act of blaming, to disapprove strongly; to blame, to condemn, etc.’,
e.g.
Her censure of falling standards in the education system was severe.
A “censer”, however, is a container in which incense is burned, or in which perfume is kept; and the person who burns incense is also called a ‘censer’.
