cavalryman:

(plural: ‘cavalrymen’; pronunciation: the letter ‘c’ is said with a ‘k’ sound as in “king” — ‘cavalry…man’)

‘Cavalry’ = (in the past) a unit of soldiers that used horses and their horses; (in the present) a unit of soldiers with light weapons and can move fast using vehicles and helicopters

French cavalrymen

(in former times) a soldier who fought on horseback;

(in the present times) a soldier of a troop of soldiers which uses light weapons and  vehicles, such as military helicopters, and move from one place to another very easily and quickly depending on the movements of the enemy,

During the Civil War, it is said, a cavalryman was as honoured as a high rank officer.

There are several movies/films that show us the brave deeds of the cavalrymen in protecting their homeland.

In keeping the past alive, the US cavalry forces have fought the Taliban in Afghanistan using horses and donkeys as did the cavalrymen on horseback a couple of centuries ago.
