(plural: ‘caterers‘; pronunciation: the letter ‘c’ is said with a ‘k’ sound as in “king”)

‘to cater’ = to provide food and entertainment; to attend to the needs of others, usually as a job or profession; to supply things that are needed

caterers at work

 

a person or firm (a restaurant) that supplies food and drinks at public or private parties –  for a wedding, celebration, dinner, etc., and also provides waiters and other necessary items for any party, as a job or business,

a caterer's ad

e.g.

‘Gourmet Caterers’ is a reliable caterer that can handle any number of guests even at a short notice.

In the past food was cooked by the hosts and friends and staff, if it is an official celebration, did the serving at any social celebration, but these days, almost all the people go for caterers who do everything for you — cooking, serving, entertaining and cleaning; you just eat and enjoy!

Caterers are in such a great demand that a special course called ‘catering service’ has been included in many colleges and educational institutions where students can have special technical training on how to make and serve food!!
