career – carrier
[slightly different end pronunciation]
The confusion may occur on account of the similarity of appearance (spelling); the pronunciation, however, is slightly different.
“Career” means ‘a job or profession which a person takes up for earning money and continues in it life long; fast or violent forward movement; full speed; a path or course taken to get something’,
e.g.
His hobby of writing books has become his career.
[i.e. he started writing books as a hobby, but latter it became his profession]
“Carrier” is
‘a person or business or a vehicle that transports (carries) goods and/or people from one place to another;
a person or animal who has a disease but does not suffer from it (immune to it) but passes that disease to others;
a metal frame fixed to a vehicle such as a bicycle, motor cycle, etc. to carry small things;
a kind of bird that belongs to pigeon family’,
e.g.
They have hired a carrier company to move their furniture.
Only the female mosquitoes are the carriers of malaria disease.
Cyclists usually keep their bags and boxes in the carriers fixed on their bicycles.
Common Errors:

After three years as a clerk in a small office, she decided it was time to change her career. [wrong]
After three years as a clerk in a small office, she decided it was time to change her job (occupation). [right]
2.
My son would like to be an engineer or something related to that career. [wrong]
My son would like to be an engineer or something related to that profession.[right]
