(a)  the young of the common cattle, before weaned (= leaving its mother and living on its own) e.g. cow, buffalo

(b)  the young of several other animals (mammals), e.g. camel, dolphin, elephant, moose, whale, seal, yak, etc.

Calf meat is called ‘veal’, but not ‘beef’ (‘beef’ = the meat of cattle: cow, bull, ox, buffalo).

Calf leather is very valuable – used in making fine/high quality shoes.

to eat the calf in the cow’s belly  =  to spend the money before one actually gets it; be too ready to think of something to happen in advance

the cow won’t have her calf till she’s ready [said to mean that we cannot rush certain things in nature; we have to leave nature to its own time-keeping]

16.
