buzzard

(pronunciation: the letter ‘u’ rhymes with the letter ‘u’ in “but”)

a kind of bird – bird of prey (= a bird which hunts and kills to eat small animals such as rats, rabbits, fish, lizards, small snakes, worms, insects, and sometimes other small birds) – related to hawks

In some places, ‘buzzard’ is a general name given to any large bird of prey; and in the USA, it is the name given to a kind of vulture.

In this course material, just to have some general idea, we choose the “common buzzard”.  The vulture and the hawk will be dealt with under their own particular names somewhere else in this material!
