a kind of fish – fresh water fish – related to cods; looks similar to an eel (in fact, sometimes and at some places it is called ‘eelpout’, another kind of fish, mistakenly); with a broad and flat head and barbels (= finger like growth of flesh) on the nose part and chin; (on average) grows to 30-35 inches and weighs 12-15 Kg.; found in the fresh waters of North America, Europe and Asia

A burbot is also called a ‘lawyer’ or ‘lawyer fish’ !

The burbot is the only species in the cod family that lives in fresh waters.

Burbot are without scales.

Burbot are an important food fish in some countries, especially in Russia.

The oil from its liver (cod liver oil) is far richer in vitamin A and D than the oil from any other member of the cod family.

Its meat tastes similar to the American lobster’s, and sometimes called ‘poor man’s lobster’.
