the general name given to the adult male of some kinds of animals, such as deer, antelope, rat, rabbit, goat, and some kinds of fish (such as ‘shad’)

Figures of Speech:
1.

a buck =

(a) a US dollar (money); a million US dollars

(b) a dashing and daring young man

(c) the skin of the deer or antelope

(d) a dandy –  a man who is very particular, (vain) about his dress, manners, etc.

(e) a beech tree

(f) a group of antelope – e.g. ‘a herd of buck’

(g) a native American or a black man (negro) in the USA [a very insulting or offensive expression; never to be used at all]

2.

‘buck-toothed’

 

 

buck-toothed  =  (of a person) with the front teeth growing more and showing from under the upper lip  (protruding teeth)

3.

buck up  =  to get back or gather one’s courage or spirit, often at the time of almost losing a fight or while facing a problem after problem

4.

buck naked  =  completely naked – without wearing any clothes on

5.

(a) as hearty as a buck

(b) as mad as a buck

(c) as wild as a buck

6.

to pass the buck  =  to pass on (shift) one’s responsibility, blame, task or duty to another person (instead of taking the responsibility for some failure or defeat, some people blame the others, saying that it was somebody else responsible for the loss, failure or defeat)

7.

like a buck of the first head  = brisk and forward
