bootlegger:

(plural: ‘bootleggers‘; pronunciation: ‘boot…legger’, the letters ‘gg’ are said with a ‘g’ sound as in “leg”)

a person who makes, carries and sells alcoholic drinks (liquor) illegally,

a bootlegger making illicit alcoholic drink

e.g.

Wherever there is a ban on public consumption of alcoholic drinks, there is a bootlegger who can readily supply different varieties of alcoholic drinks.

Gangs of bootleggers, like smugglers and drug dealers, divide the state or region where alcohol is banned into zones and each gang operates in a particular zone while cooperating and exchanging deals with the bootleggers in other zones!

Some historians allege that Joseph P. Kennedy, the father of former US President JFK, earned a lot of money and power as a bootlegger in the days of prohibition in the States.

‘Bootlegger’ is also used to refer to ‘the illicit liquor or other illicit things’, ‘the part the boot above the instep’ and a play in football. And a ‘bootlegger’ is also known as a ‘moonshiner’.
