a person, usually a young boy or man, who cleans and polishes other people’s shoes and boots, especially sitting in the streets, for money;

e.g.

You see at least one bootblack on every street corner of most of the towns and cities of the world.

One would be surprised to hear that several of the present day great people started their careers as bootblacks!

When I was in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, I used to see a number of young bootblacks shining others’ shoes, including mine, and earning a couple birr in the morning and attending the classes, including my classes at the school where I taught, in the afternoon.
